Adam On Transit
Shortly after being re-elected in Ward 18 in November, 2006, Adam was elected by his fellow TTC Commissioners to the position of TTC Chair. Since then, Adam has been very actively pursuing an aggressive agenda to improve TTC service for communities across Toronto.
Perhaps most significantly, on March 16, 2007, he launched the Transit City plan for over 120 km of light rapid rail transit (LRT) on 7 lines across the City. Although the plan was unfunded when announced, the Province of Ontario announced funding only a few months later as part of MoveOntario 2020. The TTC is now working quickly to make this vision a reality over the next few years.
While many transit agencies around the world--the TTC included--work hard to attract riders onto transit for its social, environmental and economic benefits, the TTC, almost uniquely, is also working hard to accommodate the growing ridership it already has. This means increasing the number and frequecy of buses, as well as expanding the capacity of subway and streetcar lines with automatic train control and new subway cars and streetcars.
Involving the community in the TTC and keeping a focus on riders' experience is very important to Adam. From opinions on what Toronto's new streetcars will be like, to what its new website will provide and much more, extensive consultation is the key to ensuring that transit truly provides what the public wants and needs.
Other important initiatives underway include modernization of our ageing stations, technological improvements such as an internet trip planner for route information, and a soon-to-be-announced environmental plan to ensure that the TTC's operations are at the forefront of environmental responsibility. |
